Among the Icebergs, a Greenland Eclipse - a talk by Mike Frost

 

There was an eclipse of the Sun on August 12th 2026, visible across much of Europe. Many people saw the deep partial eclipse visible from the UK, and many travelled to Spain to see a sunset total eclipse.

 

I decided to do something a little different. I was a guest astronomer for Astro-Trails on the Swan Hellenic Diana. The cruise ship left Reykjavik on August 9th and sailed north-west, beyond the Arctic Circle, to the Greenland fjords. We observed the eclipse from Ripe Fjord in the huge Scoresby Sound, and may have been the first people in the world to see totality.
